Why Unfinished Tasks Follow You Around

Unfinished tasks keep tapping your shoulder while you try to focus elsewhere. The fix isn't finishing them. It's writing down exactly when you will.

The email is still sitting in your drafts. You closed the laptop an hour ago, you are making dinner now, and some small part of you is back in that draft, rewriting the second paragraph. You are not working on it. You are not even near it. It just keeps tapping your shoulder.

Everyone has a version of this. The form you half filled out. The call you keep meaning to return. The thing you said you would deal with tomorrow, which then spends the whole evening dealing with you instead. The task is unfinished, so it follows you around, and the following has little to do with how important the task actually is.

Where Open Loops Got Their Name

The idea that unfinished things linger has a tidy origin story. In 1927, a psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik gave people little tasks like modeling clay and threading beads, and interrupted them on about half. Afterward, people remembered the interrupted tasks better than the ones they had finished. The pattern took her name, and the idea of the mental "open loop" was born.

It is a clean story, and you should hold it loosely. That original memory finding has held up poorly: a 2025 meta-analysis found no reliable memory advantage for interrupted tasks and concluded the effect "lacks universal validity," surfacing only under particular conditions. So treat Zeigarnik as the place the idea came from, not as proof of anything. And the interesting question was never really about memory. It is not whether you can recall an unfinished task. It is why the unfinished one keeps interrupting you while you try to think about something else. For that, there is a sturdier study.

What Two Unfinished Tasks Did to a Reading Test

In 2011, Roy Baumeister and E.J. Masicampo ran six experiments to pin down exactly that, and the first is the one to sit with. They brought undergraduates into a lab and split them into groups. One group wrote about two important errands they needed to finish over the next few days, real things left hanging. Another wrote about two tasks they had recently completed. Then everyone got the opening pages of a detective novel and was told to read.

The reading was the actual test. The people carrying two unfinished tasks were measurably worse at it. They reported more intrusive thoughts pulling them off the page, their minds wandered more, and when quizzed afterward they had absorbed less. Two thirds of them drifted off at least once during the passage, against a third of the group we are about to meet. The errands were nowhere on the page in front of them, and they interfered anyway. The unfinished task had rented space in their attention and was charging by the minute.

The Relief Came From Planning, Not Finishing

Here is where it turns strange. There was a third group, and this is the one that should change how you think about your own open loops. They also wrote about two unfinished tasks. But then they wrote out a specific plan for each. Not a vague intention to get to it. The actual how, when, and where: I will drop the forms at the post office on Tuesday morning on my way to the station.

They made no progress. The forms were still unmailed, the errand still unrun. And yet on the reading test, this group looked exactly like the people whose tasks were already finished. The intrusive thoughts fell away. Their comprehension came back. Writing the plan had done for their attention what actually completing the task would have done, at a fraction of the cost.

Planning, not doing

In Masicampo and Baumeister's first experiment (2011), writing a specific plan for an unfinished task quieted the intrusive thoughts as completely as finishing it would have. Participants made no real progress at all.

Committing to a specific plan for a goal may therefore not only facilitate attainment of the goal but may also free cognitive resources for other pursuits.

The distinction in that language matters. The plan does not erase the goal or fool your mind into thinking it is done. It suspends it. Once a specific plan exists, the drive to keep the task active goes quiet, ready to resume at the time the plan names. Your attention stops holding the task open because it finally has somewhere to hand it off to.

The Loop Reaches Into Unrelated Work

If this were only about reading a novel, it would be a curiosity. It is not. In another experiment, run two weeks before finals, students who described an upcoming exam had minds primed with exam-related words on a word-completion task. Those who described the exam and then made a study plan showed less of that priming, even though planning meant thinking about the exam more. Planning did not push the exam out of mind; it stopped the exam from leaking into everything else.

The starkest version used an unrelated task. Students were handed an unfinished goal, to list as many sea creatures as they could, then, before they got the chance, asked to solve a batch of anagrams. The ones stuck with the open sea-creature goal solved fewer. The ones who had first committed to a specific if-then plan for the listing task solved as many as everyone else. An unfinished goal was quietly taxing an unrelated puzzle, and a plan turned the tax off. Only a Plan You Actually Mean

There is a catch, and it keeps this honest. The plan only worked for people who genuinely intended to follow it. In the anagram study, the researchers tracked who actually used their planned strategy when the moment came. The attention benefit showed up only for them. For anyone who had written a plan they did not really mean, the loop stayed open and the interference stayed put.

The same conditionality showed up elsewhere. When the goal was regular exercise, a plan quieted the mind only for the people who genuinely cared about exercising; for those who did not, it changed nothing. Some part of your mind runs a quiet audit of whether the plan is real, and only lets the goal go when the answer is yes. A plan you scribble just to feel organized does nothing, because you already know it is theatre.

The Release Is Cognitive, Not Emotional

You might assume a plan works by making you feel calmer, crossing the task off some mental worry list. The researchers tested that, and it is not what happens. In their last two experiments they measured how people felt after reflecting on unfinished tasks: anxious, nervous, unsettled. Then some of them made a plan. The planners were just as anxious as everyone else. The plan soothed nothing. And yet the task still stopped intruding on their thoughts.

When Masicampo and Baumeister measured emotions, the plan makers stayed as anxious about the unfinished task as everyone else. The intrusive thoughts still stopped. The release runs through cognition, not by calming you down (2011).

You do not have to feel better about the task for it to stop pulling at you. You have to give it a plan concrete enough that your mind trusts the handoff. The feeling can stay ragged; the attention comes back anyway.

One caveat worth naming. Baumeister is also the best-known champion of "ego depletion," the idea that willpower is a limited fuel that drains through the day, and that theory has taken a serious beating: a large multi-lab replication effort found the effect close to zero. Reason enough to hold any single result from this lab loosely. But plan making is a separate paradigm. It measures intrusive thoughts and mental accessibility, not a draining fuel tank, and its central move, the specific if-then plan, is corroborated by one of the most heavily replicated findings in the field. Those if-then implementation intentions, Peter Gollwitzer's "when this happens, I will do that" structure, reliably lift follow-through across dozens of independent tests. This article rests on that ground, not on the contested one.

A Shutdown Ritual for Open Loops

So what do you do with an evening full of open loops. You do not have to finish them. You have to plan them, specifically enough that the plan feels real to you.

Before you stop for the day, take the handful of things still nagging and give each one a next step with a time attached. Not "deal with the invoice" but "send the invoice at 9am Thursday from my desk." Not "call the dentist" but "call the dentist tomorrow during lunch." The specificity is the whole mechanism. A vague someday keeps the loop open; a named when and where lets your mind file it and step back.
